Lake Hefner

When you need a break from museums and city streets, Lake Hefner offers a completely different Oklahoma City experience. The reservoir sits in the northwestern part of the city and has become a popular place for walking, cycling, sailing and simply watching the sunset.

The first surprise for many visitors is how open it feels. Oklahoma City is geographically huge, and places such as Lake Hefner remind you that this is not a compact urban destination.

Walk, cycle or slow down

Trails around the lake attract runners and cyclists, while parks and shoreline areas provide plenty of places to stop. The lake is also associated with sailing, and the small lighthouse has become one of its most photographed landmarks.

I would particularly consider coming later in the day. The broad western sky can make sunset the main attraction.

Dinner by the water

Restaurants near the lake make it possible to turn the visit into an easy evening rather than a dedicated sightseeing expedition. That is probably how I would use Lake Hefner on a first trip: some time outdoors followed by dinner.

You will want a car or rideshare to reach the area conveniently. It is not essential for a short Oklahoma City visit, but if you have several days and good weather, Lake Hefner shows a relaxed side of the city that downtown cannot.
