Bricktown

Bricktown is one of the easiest parts of Oklahoma City for a first-time visitor to understand. Former warehouses and industrial buildings have been transformed into restaurants, entertainment venues, hotels and attractions, all within easy reach of downtown.

The Bricktown Canal gives the district its most recognisable feature. You can walk beside the water or take a water taxi, but I think the best approach is simply to use the canal as a route through the neighbourhood rather than treating it as the only attraction.

Come for the evening

Bricktown becomes particularly lively later in the day. Restaurants, bars and entertainment make it an easy place for dinner after sightseeing, and the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark adds extra energy when there is a game.

It can feel more visitor-oriented than some of Oklahoma City’s other districts, so I would not let Bricktown become your entire impression of the city. Places such as Paseo, Midtown and Stockyards City show very different sides of OKC.

A useful base

For visitors without much time, Bricktown’s biggest advantage is convenience. Downtown attractions are nearby, the streetcar serves the area and there are plenty of hotels. Spend an evening here, but then use it as a starting point for exploring further.
