Oklahoma State Capitol

The Oklahoma State Capitol is worth seeing even if politics is not part of your travel plans. The building combines monumental architecture, state history and an extensive collection of public art, all within a short drive of downtown.

Its dome makes the Capitol easy to recognise, but I would not stop at an exterior photograph. The interior gives you a much better sense of the building and the way Oklahoma presents its own history and identity.

Art and history inside

Paintings, murals and sculptures throughout the Capitol tell stories about the state, including Native American history, settlement, oil and political life. As with many capitol buildings in the United States, the architecture itself is part of the attraction.

Because this is an active government building, access and security arrangements can change. Check current visitor information before going and be prepared for normal security procedures.

Combine it with nearby sights

The Capitol is not far from several central Oklahoma City districts, but it is easier to reach by car or rideshare than as part of a long downtown walk.

I like including state capitols on American road trips because they often reveal how a state sees itself. Oklahoma’s is no exception, and the visit provides useful context before you explore museums devoted to Western and First American history elsewhere in the city.
