Getting to and Around Oklahoma City

Plan your journey to Oklahoma City and discover the easiest ways to explore the city and its surrounding attractions.

Oklahoma City is located in the central United States and is an important transportation hub for travellers exploring Oklahoma and the surrounding region.

Whether you are arriving by plane, train or car, the city is relatively easy to reach.

However, Oklahoma City covers a large geographical area, so choosing the right transportation is important when planning your visit.

Flying to Oklahoma City

Will Rogers International Airport is the city’s main passenger airport.

Located approximately 10 kilometres southwest of downtown, it offers domestic flight connections to several major American cities.

International visitors can reach Oklahoma City through connecting flights at larger airports.

From the airport, you can travel to your accommodation by taxi, rideshare service or rental car.

Travelling by Car

Oklahoma City is located at the intersection of several major highways.

Interstate 35 connects the city with Dallas and other destinations to the south, while Interstate 40 provides an important east–west connection.

Interstate 44 connects Oklahoma City with Tulsa and other regional destinations.

The city is also an interesting stop for travellers following historic Route 66.

If you are planning a longer American road trip, Oklahoma City makes a convenient base for exploring central Oklahoma.

Travelling by Train

Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer provides passenger rail service between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth, Texas.

The train arrives at Santa Fe Depot in downtown Oklahoma City.

It can be an interesting alternative to driving if you are combining visits to Oklahoma City and North Texas.

Check current schedules and connections before planning your journey.

Getting Around Oklahoma City

EMBARK operates local bus services and the Oklahoma City Streetcar.

The streetcar connects several central districts, including Downtown, Bricktown and Midtown.

Walking is a pleasant way to explore individual neighbourhoods, although distances between attractions can be considerable.

Do You Need a Car?

If you are mainly staying downtown and visiting attractions along the streetcar route, you may be able to explore parts of Oklahoma City without renting a car.

However, a rental car is useful if you want to visit attractions outside the central districts or explore the surrounding countryside.

For a first visit, I recommend spending at least two or three days in Oklahoma City.

This gives you enough time to discover the museums, explore Bricktown and enjoy the city’s restaurants and cultural attractions.
