The first thing to understand about Oklahoma City is its size. The city covers a huge geographical area, and attractions that look reasonably close on a map can still require a drive. For most visitors who want to explore beyond downtown, a car is the simplest option.
That does not mean you need to drive everywhere. Central districts are increasingly easy to combine without constantly moving the car.
Streetcar and walking downtown
The Oklahoma City Streetcar connects several useful central areas, including Downtown, Bricktown, Midtown and Automobile Alley. It can be handy for visitors staying centrally, particularly when you are moving between restaurants, attractions and entertainment areas.
Walking also works well within individual districts. The mistake is assuming you can comfortably walk between every attraction in Oklahoma City.
When a car helps
A car becomes much more useful for places such as the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Stockyards City and destinations further from the centre. Rideshare services can fill the same role if you do not want to rent one.
My approach would be simple: if you are spending a short city break mainly downtown, try the streetcar, walking and occasional rideshares. If Oklahoma City is part of a larger Oklahoma road trip, keep the car. You will use it.
